Originally called West Fort Lee, the community was renamed Leonia in 1865 after Revolutionary War General Charles Lee, and was set off from Ridgefield Township in the 1894 "boroughitis" wave. Its early-20th-century concentration of artists, academics and Nobel laureates earned it the nickname the "Athens of New Jersey". It borders Englewood, Fort Lee, Palisades Park, Ridgefield Park, Teaneck.
