How is a carpet professionally cleaned?
Hot-water extraction does two things in one pass. Heated cleaning solution is injected into the pile under pressure, and half a second later it is drawn back out through the same head, carrying the soil with it. Most carpet manufacturers specify this method because whatever goes into the carpet comes out of it again.
A vacuum removes what sits loose on the surface. It does not reach the film of grit, skin, pollen and street dirt that has worked down to the point where the fibers meet the backing, and that is where the color change in a traffic lane comes from. The carpet in that strip is loaded with soil rather than worn out.
Before extraction the room is vacuumed, and edges and stairs are worked by hand where the machine head cannot sit flat. Stains are pre-treated and given time to break down instead of being scrubbed, which is what fuzzes and permanently distorts carpet fiber.
Is carpet steam cleaning the same as hot water extraction?
What almost everybody calls steam cleaning is hot water extraction. The machine heats water, mixes in cleaning solution and pushes it into the carpet under pressure through a wand, then vacuums it straight back out into a recovery tank on the pull stroke. The visible vapor coming off a warm carpet in a cool room is where the word steam came from.
A true steam or vapor machine is a different tool. It boils a small tank of water and releases hot vapor through a nozzle, and it has no vacuum and no recovery tank, so anything it loosens stays in the pile until somebody wipes or vacuums it later.
So when you book a steam cleaning here, this is the machine that arrives. High heat lifts soil from deep in the carpet fibers, and the extraction is the half that decides the result: whatever goes into the carpet comes back out again, along with the soil it released.
Why do carpeted stairs take the longest?
A staircase has three surfaces on every step: the tread, the riser and the carpeted stringer at each side. Each one takes soil differently. Treads collect ground-in traffic soil, risers collect scuff marks, and the stringers collect the soil a vacuum pushes to the side.
Stairs cannot be cleaned with the machine head alone. They need a hand tool and a technician working on every step. It is the slowest part of most visits and the part where the difference is most visible, because a staircase is seen from directly above in full light.
Why do pet stains come back after cleaning?
When a dog or a cat has an accident, the liquid does not stop at the carpet. It passes into the pad underneath and often into the subfloor below. Cleaning the surface alone leaves the carpet looking correct for about a week, after which the odor returns or a yellow-brown ring rises through the pile as the padding dries. That process is called wicking, and it is why the same stain appears to come back.
The treatment goes to the contamination where it sits rather than where it shows. Odor removal and pet stain removal are the two subjects Google review tags surface most often on our listing after the general ones.
The products we use
Non-toxic, biodegradable products, safe around family and pets. No room needs to be aired out afterwards and pets can stay in the home. The comment we receive most often is that the house smelled fresh rather than smelling of cleaning products.
For property managers and businesses
The same visit is booked for a business as for a house. Every service is performed at the property, with no shop to visit and nothing dropped off, and bookings are taken 24 hours a day by appointment across 228 towns in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset and Union counties. A floor that can only be worked on outside opening hours is booked for those hours.
A written estimate comes before the work starts. It is for the property described and it does not change at the door. Carpet cleaned by hot-water extraction is dry within hours in warm weather and takes longer in winter, up to 48 hours for thick or dense carpet, which is what decides when a space is usable again. Apartments, condominiums and rental turnovers are part of the carpet work described above, and the six services on this site are the same six in a commercial property, so most visits combine two or three of them while the furniture is being moved anyway.
Booking a carpet cleaning visit
Clear light items from the floor before we arrive: toys, shoes and laundry baskets. We move furniture that two people can lift safely and put it back. Tell us about pets, about any stain you already know is stubborn, and about any room that has to be usable again by a set time, because all three change how the visit is planned.
We work across Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset and Union counties and take bookings at any hour. Send a photo of the worst area with your inquiry. It is the fastest way to receive a clear answer about what will come out.
